Canada’s Greener Homes Grant
Did you know that buildings, including our homes, account for 18% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions? Because of this, the federal government wants to help Canadians make their homes more energy-efficient through the Greener Homes Grant - and you may be eligible for up to $5,600 through this initiative!
By making your home more efficient, it will be more comfortable, more affordable to maintain and more environmentally friendly. That’s a win-win for everybody! The Canada Greener Homes Grant will help homeowners make their homes more energy-efficient, create new jobs across Canada for energy advisors, grow our domestic green supply chains, and fight climate change.
What’s available through the initiative?
The Canada Greener Homes Grant provides funds for home evaluations and for retrofits, up to a total of $5,600. Homeowners are eligible for up to $600 total for the cost of pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluations and for up to $5,000 total for the implementation of eligible retrofits such as home insulation, windows doors, heating and ventilation systems and air sealing.
Residents of Quebec must apply directly through the Rénoclimat program by taking the following five steps:
Step 1: Before undertaking any work, call 1-866-266-0008. When your application is received, a Rénoclimat advisor will contact you to agree on the date and time of your first appointment.
Step 2: A Rénoclimat advisor will come to your home to carry out a pre-work energy evaluation. Your advisor will calculate the EnerGuide rating of your home and send you an evaluation report containing efficiency recommendations.
Step 3: Carry out the energy renovations yourself or hire someone to do them for you. Use the recommendations listed in the evaluation report to guide you through the work.
Step 4: Contact your advisor again to obtain the post-work energy evaluation of your home. The Rénoclimat advisor will come to your home to assess the improvements and calculate its new EnerGuide rating. The first post-work energy evaluation is provided free of charge.
Step 5: If you are eligible, and if you have provided your social insurance number or Quebec enterprise number, your cheque for Rénoclimat financial assistance will be mailed to you 10 to 12 weeks after the post-work evaluation.
