A New Voice for Beaconsfield
When artist and advocate Nicole Corrado moved from Toronto to Beaconsfield, she was drawn to the quiet streets, the sense of community, and the promise of something slower. But what she found was a city with potential — and a few blind spots.
Now running for mayor, Nicole wants to make sure every resident feels seen, heard, and included. Her platform centers on accessibility, transparency, and compassion — values shaped by her own lived experience.
Making the City Accessible for Everyone
Nicole knows what it’s like to navigate Beaconsfield without a car. She’s seen how difficult it can be to get around safely, especially for seniors, people with disabilities, or anyone relying on public transit.
Her priorities include:
- Expanding bus routes along Elm Street and Beaurepaire Drive to connect north and south Beaconsfield
- Improving pedestrian safety along busy streets like Boulevard St-Charles
- Upgrading accessibility at train stations, including ramps, elevators, and better signage
Simple improvements, she says, can make daily life easier for everyone.
Opening the Doors to Transparency
Nicole believes residents deserve to know how their tax dollars are spent.
Right now, many city meetings — from budget discussions to environmental committees — happen behind closed doors. Nicole wants that to change.
Her proposal:
- Open all meetings to the public
- Stream them on Zoom using an interactive format that lets residents safely speak and participate
She points to Halifax as a model for accessible, transparent governance. “Listening,” she says, “is the most important part of communication.”
Advocating for Animals and Education
One of Nicole’s passions is animal welfare. She’s pushing for a public, community-run animal services hub that goes beyond just dogs.
Her vision includes:
- A pet food and supply bank to help struggling families
- Low-cost microchip and vaccine clinics, funded by donations
- Partnerships with the library and schools to educate kids about caring for animals
She also hopes to collaborate with groups like the EcoMuseum, Coyote Watch Canada, and Furbearer Defenders to promote safe coexistence with wildlife.
Addressing Affordability and Housing
Beaconsfield, Nicole notes, isn’t as wealthy as people think. Many residents struggle to afford housing, food, and pet care.
Her housing plan focuses on gentle density — small changes that can make a big impact:
- Legalizing basement, attic, and garage apartments
- Introducing mixed-use zoning so commercial spaces can include housing
- Supporting affordable, pet-friendly units and creating a registry of accessible homes
She believes this kind of inclusive growth strengthens community without changing the city’s character.
A Compassionate Approach to Public Safety
Nicole also wants to rethink how the city responds to mental health emergencies. Instead of relying solely on police, she proposes a civilian-led crisis response service, modeled after the Toronto Community Crisis Service.
Teams of social workers and healthcare professionals, not police officers, would handle mental health calls — reducing costs and improving outcomes.
Preserving Green Space and Managing Flooding
For Nicole, Beaconsfield’s natural areas are sacred. She’s committed to protecting Angel Woods and restoring local wetlands to reduce flooding.
Her “sponge city” idea includes:
- Daylighting creeks and reintroducing natural drainage
- Creating marsh and bog gardens
- Encouraging permeable driveways and landscaping that manages runoff
“Green space isn’t just for wildlife,” she says. “It’s for mental health, calm, and connection.”
Building a Community That Cares
From community gardens to affordable local markets, Nicole’s vision for Beaconsfield is rooted in empathy and practicality. She wants to make sure no one has to choose between rent and groceries — and that everyone, from seniors to neurodivergent residents, can find belonging here.
Her goal is simple:
A Beaconsfield that works for everyone.
